DIB / Help Context


  1. Registration
    Users are required to register in order to take advantage of all the features of Dictionary of Irish Biography. You can register from the Homepage by clicking the 'Create an Account' link which is displayed below the Login text fields on the left side of the page. If you already have access to Cambridge Journals Online, you can log in to Dictionary of Irish Biography using your CJO username and password.

    How to register:

    1) Click Create an Account link.
    2) The system displays Registration page.
    3) Provide all the necessary details.
    NOTE: Ensure that all fields with asterisks (*) are provided with information.
    4) Select Terms of Use checkbox.
    5) Click Submit button.
    6) The system displays registration confirmation message: 'Registration successful!'

    NOTE: In registering, you are required to accept the Terms of Use before to register. This is also viewable in all pages.
  2. Log in
    NOTE: The log in process is not required for institutional users to access the Dictionary of Irish Biography but does provide access to all of the features of the product.

    The log in process enables the system to authenticate your access and identifies your access type through your USERNAME and PASSWORD. You can log in from the Homepage by entering your username or email address and password on the text fields provided.

    How to log in:

    1) Click Log in tab.
    2) The system rolls down to display Log In section.
    3) Enter your Username (or Email Address) and Password.
    4) Click Log in button.

    NOTE: If you are logged in, system displays 'Logged in as (Username)'. Log In section changes to Subscriber Details. Click on the tab to open and close the section.
  3. Forgotten your password
    A 'Forgotten your Password' link appears below the Log In text fields. This feature enables you to retrieve forgotten passwords.

    How to retrieve your username and password:

    1) Click Forgotten your Password link.
    2) The system displays Forgot your Password or Username page.
    3) Enter your email address in the required text field.
    4) Select from the options provided as to what you prefer will be emailed to you.
    5) The system will send you an email containing your username and preferred password.

    NOTE: A temporary password can be used to log in to your account after which you can access the 'Change Registration Details' page and change the temporary password to a new one of your choice.
  4. Change Registration Details
    In the Change Registration Details page, you can modify registered personal details as well as change username and password within your profile.

    How to edit your registration details:

    1) Click Change Registration Details link.
    2) The system displays Change Registration Details page.
    3) Edit your registration details.
    4) Click Update button.
    5) The system displays registration confirmation message: 'Update Profile Successful!'
  5. Logout
    To log out of DIB, click the 'Log out' button that displays below Subscriber Details tab.
  6. View Organization Details
    A user will be able to manage one (1) or more organisation. Organisation Details page displays organisation(s) you are managing. Just click the Organisation Details tab to view the list of organizations. Click on the tab to close the window.
  7. Faq
    The FAQ page displays the list of frequently asked questions to assist users with how to access and use DIB online. Just click the FAQ link and the system displays the corresponding FAQ page with related topics.
  8. Athens & Shibboleth Log in
    These features allow you to access the libraries of Athens and Shibboleth. You just have to login in with the corresponding authentication points and the system will enable you to the access their features.
  9. Quick Search
    The Quick search feature (found on the top of the page) allows you to search within the DIB site by entering a keyword Person or Full text. Entering a keyword and clicking 'Search' button will display all matching results based on the specified keyword criteria. Quick search is available from every page.

    Searching by Full text via Quick Search will return texts of all entries and provides an exact match for the search query by default. Matching words within the search results will be highlighted.

    In performing another search after a search, from the search results page, you can just do the highlight and search process.

    How to search using highlight and search process:

    1) Highlight the preferred word.
    2) Click Full Text link on the Search bar.
    3) Click Search button.
    4) The system displays search results page with highlighted matches of the keyword indicated.


    NOTE: Full text link is used to search for keywords while name is used to search for specific names.
  10. Advanced Search
    The Advanced Search feature allows you to filter further a search or search for specific references within DIB Online. You can access the Advanced Search by selecting the Advanced Search tab or click link that is found below the Search bar.

    How to use Advanced Search:

    1) Click Advanced Search link (or Advance Search tab).
    2) The system displays the Advanced Search page.
    3) Provide the necessary search details.
    4) Click Search button.
    5) The system displays the results of your search.

    NOTE: If there is no match for the parameters you have indicated, Search Results will display with a message, 'Found 0 match(es) that matched query(ies) (of what you have indicated)'. The system will display Suggestions page to assist you in your search.
  11. Refine Search
    Refine search is available for the Browse (for Name only) and Search. Refine search appears if you are not able to generate results after performing a search or browse for biography names. You are enabled further filter your search through parameters displayed by the system. This feature which displays below the Login tab or Subscriber Details tab, provides you specified search parameters to enable you to filter another search.


    How to use Refine Search (after a search):

    1) Select Gender from drop down list.
    2) Select Search by from drop down list.
    3) Enter Year.
    4) Enter Place.
    5) Select Fields of Interest from drop down list.
    6) Click Search button.
    7) The system displays search results.


    How to use Refine Search (to Browse for Biography names):

    1) Enter letter in 'Go to Name Starting With' text field.
    2) Select Gender from drop down list.
    3) Click Browse button.
    4) The system displays list of biography names with the specified parameters.

    NOTE: You can also select the letter from the alphabet navigation on top to view the list of Biography names with surnames starting with the letter selected.
  12. Search Results
    The Search Results page displays after you have performed a search. Search can be conducted for Browse (Biography name or Contributor) and keywords which will generate search results for Name, Contributor or Biography page. As example using Quick search, Biography names results page shows the list of Biography names with brief personal details of each with a brief snippet of their biography/ies. This matched the search keyword you have indicated in the search bar. Search results will be displayed alphabetically by default. You can click the Biography Name link to view the entire personal details or biography of the person however this information is available only to the purchasers of the Dictionary of Irish Biography. Filter tools like Sort by is also available. If you wish to go to a certain page, enter the page number in the 'Go to page' text field then click 'Go' button. A refine search feature is displayed under Subscriber Details tab is also available to enable you to filter contributors according to surname and gender. From the search results page, you can also save a search result or bookmark this to create your 'My Collections'.


    How to use Saved Search or Add a new Entry:

    1) Click Save Search button of the results page selected.
    2) The system displays a Save this Search page.
    3) Enter Title.
    4) Enter Description.
    5) Click Save button.
    6) The system closes page and saves selected search results in your 'My Collections' page.


    How to Bookmark or Add a new Entry:

    1) Click Name (if search results page of names of biographies is on view) or Contributor link.
    2) Hover Article Services tab.
    3) Click Bookmark link.
    4) The system displays Bookmark this Entry page.
    5) Enter Name.
    6) Enter Description.
    7) Click Save button.
    8) The system closes page and bookmarks the page in your 'My Collections' page.
  13. Browse
    The Browse feature enables you to view the biography names, biographies and contributors of the biographies.

    How to browse a Biography:

    1) Hover over Browse tab.
    2) The system displays options.
    3) Click Name tab.
    4) The system displays List of Biographies page.
    5) Click selected Name link.
    6) The system displays the Biography page of selected name.

    NOTE: The Biography page is available only to the purchasers of the Dictionary of Irish Biography. You can use the Refine search feature on the left of the page to search for your preferred biography name or use the alphabet navigation tool on the top of the page.


    How to browse biographies created by a Contributor:

    1) Hover over Browse tab.
    2) The system displays options.
    3) Click Contributor tab.
    4) The system displays List of Contributors page.
    5) Click Name of Contributor link.
    6) The system displays the biographies created by the selected contributor.

    NOTE: You can click the Contributor's name link to view the biographies written by him. However this information or page is available only to the purchasers of the Dictionary of Irish Biography.
  14. About DIB
    About DIB page displays what DIB is all about as well as the comments and remarks of prominent personalities in the industry.
  15. Read a Random Life
    Read a Random Life page displays a biography which was randomly selected by the system. When you leave the page then decide to go back, the system will display another biography. To print, email or bookmark the biography are just some of the services you can do with the biography on display. Hover Articles Services to select the action you wish to perform. You can also share the article with other social sites. Click Expand button to view the entire biography.
  16. My Collections
    My Collections page presents collection of Saved Searches and Bookmarks you have created and when these were created. You can create the Saved Searches from the search results pages and Bookmarks from the biography pages.

    You can update My Collections and view the content of each Saved search or Bookmark. Just click the Saved Search Name link to view the search result you have saved. To view the bookmarked Name (of a biography) page, just click the Bookmark Name link.

    Edit Saved Search:

    1) Click Edit icon of corresponding Saved Search name.
    2) The system displays Update Saved Search page.
    3) Edit Title.
    4) Edit Description.
    5) Click Save button.
    6) The system saves changes and displays My Collections page again.


    Delete Saved Search:

    1) Click Delete icon of corresponding Saved Search name.
    2) The system displays a Confirmation pop-up message.
    3) Click Ok button.
    4) The system removes the Saved Search name and refreshes Saved Searches list.


    Edit Bookmark:

    1) Click Edit icon of corresponding Bookmark name.
    2) The system displays Update Bookmark page.
    3) Edit Name.
    4) Edit Description.
    5) Click Save button.
    6) The system saves changes and displays My Collections page again.


    Delete Saved Search:

    1) Click Delete icon of corresponding Bookmark name.
    2) The system displays a Confirmation pop-up message.
    3) Click Ok button.
    4) The system removes the Saved Search name and refreshes Saved Searches list.
  17. Bookmark (Beside the Sitemap)
    This feature that remains to be found on top of the page enables you to bookmark the website. Once you click on the Bookmark icon (on the top rightmost part of the page), an Add Bookmark pop-up box displays. You can now indicate where in the directory you wish your bookmark to appear. Afterwards, you can check your bookmarked webpage by clicking the Bookmarks tab on the menu toolbar on top of the screen.

    How to use the Bookmark:

    1) Click Bookmark icon.
    2) The system displays an Add Bookmark pop-up box.
    3) Enter Name.
    4) Select Create In option from drop down list.
    Note: You can also select from an existing directory where you wish to create the bookmark by clicking the arrow button beside the Create In drop down list.

    5) Click Ok button.
    6) The system creates the bookmark in the folder selected.
  18. Site Map
    This feature which is found on the top of the page beside the Bookmark icon also works as an alternative form for navigation map. It provides you a visual or textually organized model of DIB's website's content which will enable you to navigate through the site and find the information you are looking for. This page displays an interactive table of contents, in which each listed item links directly to its counterpart page in the website.

    How to use the Sitemap:

    1) Click Site Map icon.
    2) The system displays Site Map page.
    3) Select link of choice.
    4) The system displays corresponding page of choice.

  19. Browse - Name - Biography Page
    The Biography page displays functionalities that allow you to perform various services on the page. One of this is the Article Services feature that allows you to print, view the PDF format, bookmark, email, export citation and export RIS of the biography on display. Just hover on the tab and select the link of your desired activity. You can also share the biography page with social sites like Del.icio.us and Facebook through the Share this Article tab. The same process with Article Services applies. To view the page in full screen, click View Full Screen tab.
  20. How to view articles in PDFs
    All articles are viewable in PDFs (Portable Document Format). PDFs show the articles on screen as they appear on the printed page. To view PDF articles, you need Adobe's Acrobat Reader. This is available for free and can be downloaded from the Adobe website. If you are not responsible for maintaining your computers you should consult with your library administrator or IT/MIS staff before downloading any software.
  21. Account Administrator
    This feature is only available to Account Administrators. As Account Administrator you are enabled to perform functions like configure IP address, activate subscriptions, update organisational subscriptions, run reports, manage user accesses and details, manage URL resolver, view organisation details, change administrator and update organisation logo.

    1) How to use Configure IP address:

    The Configure IP address page allows you to make changes on the IP configurations. As Account Administrator you need to give members of your organisation access to the material you have subscribed to. You just need to supply the IP addresses that identify the eligible machines on your network. To add a single IP address or range, enter the address into the first text box below. To add multiple IPs/ranges you can copy and paste comma-delimited IPs/ranges into the larger text box. If you want to exclude IP addresses that are part of a range, enter the IPs you wish to exclude in the first textbox and select the Exclude checkbox. To delete a complete IP range, select the Delete checkbox corresponding the address.

    2) How to activate Organisational Subscriptions:

    The Activate Organisational Subscriptions page enables you to activate your organisational subscriptions. You just need to enter your subscriber number in the text box provided then click Activate button.

    3) How to use Subscription Details:
    The Organisational Subscription Details page displays the list of your organisation's activated subscriptions. The most recent volume of each title that your organisation has access to is also shown. You can click Activate More button to proceed to activate organisational subscriptions.

    4) How to use Counter Report:

    The Counter Report page allows you to run reports by entering your selection criteria options. Just select from options reports for Number of Successful Section Requests by month and time or Total Searches and Sessions by month and title radio button after selecting the target year. Click Run Report button to launch the file downloader window. The system displays the report on Excel format so you can proceed to print the reports.

    5) Remote User Access

    The Remote User Access page enables you to manage your users' accesses. You can add a new remote user, edit remote user details and delete existing users. You can also activate and deactivate a user. This page can be sorted according to Last Name, First Name, Username, Expiry date and Activation date.

    a) How to add a new remote user:

    1) Click New Remote User button.
    2) The system displays New Remote User page.
    3) Enter Title.
    4) Enter First Name.
    5) Enter Last Name.
    6) Select Country.
    7) Enter Username.
    8) Enter Password.
    9) Enter Confirm Password.
    10) Enter Email.
    11) Enter Confirm Email.
    12) Enter Activation Date (DDMonYYYY).
    13) Enter Expiry Date (DDMonYYYY).
    14) Click Update button.
    15) The system displays Confirmation message pop-up.
    16) Click Ok button.
    17) The system saves the data.

    NOTE: Username and password need to be a minimum of four characters. These can be a combination of letters and numbers and are case sensitive.

    b) How to edit a new remote user:

    1) Click selected Remote User Name link.
    2) The system displays Remote User Details page.
    3) Edit Title.
    4) Edit First Name.
    5) Edit Last Name.
    6) Select Country.
    7) Edit Username.
    8) Edit Password.
    9) Edit Confirm Password.
    10) Edit Email.
    11) Edit Confirm Email.
    12) Edit Activation Date (DDMonYYYY).
    13) Edit Expiry Date (DDMonYYYY).
    14) Click Update button.
    15) The system saves changes.

    c) How to delete a remote user:

    1) Click selected Remote User Name link.
    2) The system displays Remote User Details page.
    3) Click Delete Remote User button.
    4) The system deletes the remote user from the list.

    d) How to 'activate' a remote user:

    1) Click selected Remote User Name link.
    2) The system displays Remote User Details page.
    3) Click Activate Remote User button.
    4) The system activates selected remote user.

    NOTE: A remote user can be activated or deactivated.

    6) Open a URL Resolver

    Through the Open URL Resolver page you can add a new URL Resolver. Just enter the new URL Resolver on the text field provided and click Update button. The new URL Resolver will appear corresponding the Current URL Resolver. You can remove a current URL Resolver by simply clicking the Delete button.

    7) Update Organisation Details

    The Update Organisation Details page allows you make changes to keep your organisation's details up-to-date. You can also add your own messages to your users' Dictionary of Irish Biography Online homepage.

    a) How to edit organization details:

    1) Select Type.
    2) Enter Athens ID.
    3) Enter Organisation Name.
    4) Enter Display Name.
    5) Enter Display Message.
    6) Select Country.
    7) Select County/State/Province.
    8) Enter Post/Zip Code.
    9) Enter Address.
    10) Enter Address 2.
    11) Select 'Do not allow end users to send Article Purchase requests.' checkbox.
    12) Select 'Do not allow end users to send Journal Subscription requests.' checkbox.
    13) Click Update button.
    14) The system saves changes.


    8) Change Administrator
    The Change Administrator page enables you to manage your password. You can change your password anytime you wish. However, you have to register first the user name you would like for the new account administrator.

    How to change administrator password:
    1) Enter Current Administrator Password.
    2) Enter New Administrator Username.
    3) Enter New Administrator Password.
    4) Enter Confirm Password.

    9) Upgdate Organisation Logo

    In the Update Organisation Logo page, you can upload your logo or remove a current one. You can upload an image that will be displayed to all members of your organisation whenever they visit Dictionary of Irish Biography Online. Just browse for and select an image and then click Upload button. Click Refresh button or F5 for the page to refresh.
